I am always interested in how people relate and respond to each other and a Networking event I went to today was a great opportunity to practice some new effective techniques
Here's some of my thoughts about it...
It's seen as almost sacrilege to enter any networking event these days without a box-full, ready to thrust into someone else's sweaty palm in the hope they will be ringing the next day with a big contract.
I am sure that does happen..occasionally but I also noticed how most people just give them out like serviettes, without any real thought or consideration, I personally know that once I have left an event, I rarely get excited about looking at their business card again, and they join the hundreds of others I have in a box at home.
So, I decided to break this golden rule today and make a point of NOT having a business card and instead think of another more effective way to get someone to remember me.
The phrase 'Don't tell me, show me' came to mind.
Instead of talking about how great I am at Photography, I decided to show potential clients the quality of my work and even better, how it can benefit THEM.
So, I took my camera with me and when asked for my card, I instead asked if i could take a picture of them and I would then email them the picture so they could use the picture for their own stuff and also would have my contact details already in their inbox!
I found this approach was much more satisfying for me as I was doing what I do best and it was then obvious to others what I was, it saved me having to TELL then about my features, instead I could SHOW them the benefits of my service; they where also flattered and got excited at the thought of their FREE image!
Here's some of the lovely people I met today..
She should know, she has two children and runs a business!
You can find out more about her right here
We didn't have much time to talk as we were in the middle of a 'Speed Networking' session but more about her business can be found here
Unfortunatley I didn't get to hear about her Business at all as we were hurried along so quickly but if you think you need a 'Check up from the neck-up', then you might want to check her site out here
You might be thinking at this point, 'So where there any men at this event?'
Well, yes there were plenty but to be honest, most where far too ugly to show my Photography off in it's best light!
So to summarise all this, I guess you could boil it down to 3 main tips I have to share with you today:
1. Dare to be different!
2. Focus on the benefits of your service/product and not just your features!
3. Always include pictures of attractive women on your site/blog!
As I am writing this, people are packing up and heading home, out into the cold, snowy weather.
One guy is in conversation with a lady, the venue manager..
She: 'Nice to see you again, did you have a good day?'
He: 'Yes, thank you, I met lots of people and I have a pocketful of business cards...I've just got to figure out what to do with them all now!'
I rest my case...
